Sergeant Heath distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 6th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Bois de Chery Chenes, France, 20 October 1918, while manning a machine gun in exposed position and in assisting wounded to shelter under enemy fire.
