Hammond (ASN: 550580), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Hammond distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Moulins, France, 15 July 1918, while remaining with his platoon after being wounded.

While serving with Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, from 15 – 18 July 1918, near Moulins, France, Corporal Hammond was severely wounded in his leg and arm, but refused to be evacuated and remained with his platoon throughout the engagement.
