By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Stewart M. Grayson, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 4 October 1918, immediately after an attack by the 7th U.S. Infantry and 8th Machine Gun Battalion, Lieutenant Grayson established a dressing station in the town of Cierges, France. This town had just been cleared of the enemy and was still under terrific bombardment. Regardless of the bombardment, Lieutenant Grayson was in the fire-swept streets, directing the litter bearers and walking patients, loading and directing the ambulances.
