Mess Sergeant Gilleran distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Machine Gun Company, 310th Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Thiaucourt, France, 3 October 1918, while preparing a hot meal for his company during enemy bombardment.
