Francis (ASN: 549346), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant First Class Francis distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Le Charmel, France, 22 July 1918, while assisting a wounded officer to shelter during enemy bombardment.
