Corporal Dutton distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 6th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in the Bois de Clair Chenes, north of Cunel, France, 20 October 1918, while assisting in the capture of two machine guns.

Dutton (ASN: 158947), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 6th Engineer Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Claire Chenes Woods, on 20 October 1918, Corporal Dutton showed great bravery and readiness in action, going twice on missions with Private Guterman and cleaning out German machine gun nests of great annoyance. He attacked and remained with his company although marked “Sick in Quarters”.
