Private First Class [then Private] Byrd distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Sanitary Detachment, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in the Battle of Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918, in refusing to be evacuated although wounded, and in aiding the wounded under fire.
