By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant [then Private] Frank P. Brown (ASN: 80653), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant [then Private] Brown distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 8th Machine-Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action on Hill 215, France, 14 – 15 July 1918. Sergeant Brown took command of a squad and prevented the loss of a machine gun from an important position.

While serving with the 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Brown took command of his squad after the Corporal was killed. Upon his emplacement being struck, Sergeant Brown moved his squad to an alternative position and continued firing, showing marked aggressiveness and initiative.
