Corporal Heitz distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during the advance on 23 July 1918, near Jaulgonne, France, in voluntarily posting himself where he could observe the movement of the enemy, this under heavy enemy fire.

While serving with Company L, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the advance on 23 July 1918 near Jaulgonne, when his company had reached its objective, Corporal Heitz had only one man left is his squad whereupon he voluntarily went on post himself under heavy shell fire so that he could observe the movement of the enemy.
