Sergeant Hall distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in the Bois d’Aigremont, France, 15 July 1918, in volunteering for duty in a reconnoitering patrol to go in search of the enemy.

While serving with Company M, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois D-Aigremont, on 15 July 1918, Sergeant Hall voluntarily led a reconnoitering patrol into enemy territory and by the success of his dangerous mission aided greatly in the success gained the following day.
