Gumpert (ASN: 297514), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Gumpert distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Battery D, 119th Field Artillery Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Montfaucon, France, 30 September 1918, in voluntarily starting to prepare a meal for the battery, being constantly under terrific enemy fire.
