While serving with Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Gottschall shoed entire disregard to danger and able control of men under artillery and machine gun fire during the advance on the village near Le Charmel, on 25 July 1918, He maintained order in the town after its occupation, forming outposts from scattered squads of the Battalion with the greatest presence of mind and coolness.
