By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant John A. Gottschall (ASN: 540820), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Gottschall distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Le Charmel, France, 25 July 1918, in displaying great presence of mind and coolness.

While serving with Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Gottschall shoed entire disregard to danger and able control of men under artillery and machine gun fire during the advance on the village near Le Charmel, on 25 July 1918, He maintained order in the town after its occupation, forming outposts from scattered squads of the Battalion with the greatest presence of mind and coolness.
