By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Ora F. Gaylord (ASN: 543328), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Medical Detachment, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 18 June 1918, in the Bois de Belleau, Private Gaylord voluntarily went into a sector occupied by another company far back in the woods to the aid of a wounded man whom he heard calling for help. This happened while the Germans were putting down a terrific barrage in that sector, and one man had already been killed in going to the assistance of this wounded man. Although the wounded man died from loss of blood, he saved the life of another soldier who was slightly wounded but had become demented because of gas and high explosive and was in the act of committing suicide.
