While serving with Headquarters Company, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Montfaucon, France, on 19 October 1918, although he was a Private, he assumed command of an advance detail and voluntarily maintained communication between Regimental and Battalion Commanders, while under heavy fire.

While serving with Headquarters Company, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the night of 14 July and the morning of 15 July 19198, near Courboin, France, Private Fitzpatrick, who was on the regimental telephone detail when the telephone communication was shot out, volunteered to carry messages. This he did bravely through the heaviest bombardment and after running messages spent the remaining part of the night and morning repairing lines under fire of gas and shell.
