While serving with Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, near Mezy, France, during the Battle of the Marne, when his platoon leader was killed, Sergeant Farrell rallied the men of his platoon and manned the trenches in the face of heavy enemy fire.
