    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) David J. Ewing, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Second Lieutenant Ewing distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Le Charmel, France, 25 July 1918, in leading his company forward in the attack.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) David J. Ewing, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 25 July 1918, Lieutenant Ewing displayed the highest personal valor and heroism in leading his company in the attack on a village near le Charmel, France. His personal example on this occasion steadied his men and enabled them to advance through an intense bombardment. He was killed by shell fire in the execution of this duty.
