By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) William A. Clarkson, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving as Commanding Officer of Supply Company 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the advance of Bois de Beuge on 9 October 1918, Captain Clarkson volunteered and assisted in reconnoitering the front line positions of our troops in the Bois de Cunel and returned with important information to the Commanding Officer, 30th Infantry Regiment, under heavy machine gun, gas, and shell fire.
