By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) William A. Clarkson, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Captain Clarkson distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Supply Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Bois-de-Beuge, France, 9 October 1918, in voluntarily reconnoitering the front line positions under heavy shell fire.

While serving with Supply Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the German offensive of 15 – 18 July 1918, Captain Clarkson made repeated voluntary trips over the entire sector of the 30th Infantry to insure the proper supply of the troops of ammunition, rations, and water. He was repeatedly under heavy shell fire and machine gun fire and unprotected. During the Meuse-Argonne offensive he made two voluntary reconnaissances of the front line positions and by so doing was able to give most valuable information concerning enemy movements to his Commanding Officer.
