While serving with Company A, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal Burk displayed great courage and devotion to duty on the afternoon of 15 October 1918, in the Bois de Foret northeast of Cunel, when he voluntarily offered to carry an important message through artillery fire after a previous runner had been killed. Before he had gone 50 yards, he, too, was killed by shell fire.
