Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Burgess distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Vaux, France, 12 June 1918, while assisting the wounded under fire, although himself wounded.
