By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) James Moore Austin, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant Austin distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Les Franquettes Farm, France, 23 July 1918, in personally carrying messages to the Company Commander under heavy machine gun fire.

While serving with the 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Austin displayed great courage and disregard for danger at les Franquettes Farm on 23 July 1918. He personally carried orders to the company commanders through heavy machine gun fire and when the enemy had exploded hidden mines and the badly shaken line had been ordered back to the edge of the woods, he repeatedly exposed himself to danger in helping to reorganize the line and rendered invaluable assistance to his battalion commander during the subsequent advance.
