By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Major (Field Artillery) Jonathan W. Anderson, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Major Anderson commanded the 1st Battalion during the entire Second Battle of the Marne and during the advance of his Battalion from St. Eugene to Roncheres. Major Anderson showed rare judgement and the greatest of courage in pushing his battalion into forward positions. He made several reconnaissances in extremely dangerous positions in order to secure an advantageous position for his batteries. On two different occasions, once on 27 July 1918 in the little woods near La Defense, and again on 30 July 1918, near Roncheres, Major Anderson for several hours had his Post of Command in the open, exposed to enemy shell fire, the better to maintain liaison between his three batteries.
