The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major General Jonathan Waverly Anderson (ASN: 0-3196), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, as Commanding General, 3d Infantry Division. General Anderson conducted in a superior manner the amphibious training of his own division and elements of the 3d Infantry Division, and of the 2d Armored Division pertaining to the Western Task Force; he also coordinated and supervised the various movements incident to the loading and unloading of elements of the Western Task Force for trial landings. By his tact and deep understanding and superior leadership he developed and maintained harmonious relationships with Navy and port authorities. On 8 November 1942, when his division landed on the coast of Africa, and during the succeeding days, his calmness in battle and the tireless effectiveness with which he moved his command relentlessly forward in exact accord with a prearranged time schedule demonstrated the highest type of leadership. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Anderson and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
