Terry Allen was a non-graduating member of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1911. His family had a long line of military tradition. Besides his father, Allen’s maternal grandfather was Colonel Carlos de la Mesa, a Spanish national who fought at Gettysburg for the Union Army in the Spanish Company of the “Garibaldi Guard” of the 39th New York State Volunteers, during the American Civil War. Terry Allen attended but did not graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. His son, Lieutenant Colonel Terry de la Mesa AllenJr., was killed in action while leading troops of the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major General Terry DeLaMesa Allen (ASN: 0-3461), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility as Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division from 2 August 1942 to 2 October 1943. General Allen trained the 1st Infantry Division for its part in the landings in North Africa, led it in those landings and through the Tunisian Campaign. His skill as courage as a soldier, his forthright and frank personality, and his determination to carry through to his assigned objective in spite of all obstacles have enabled him to lead his division with outstanding success through months of arduous combat service, and have created in this division an unusual and marked esprit de corps. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Allen and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army.
