By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Arthur Richard Walk, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company K, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 11 October 1918, at Cunel Woods the 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, advanced to “leap-frog” the 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, but was completely demoralized and scattered by terrific barrage before reaching the “jumping off” place, and Captain Walk went out among the scattered units and after reorganizing them led them to the “jump off” point. He was twice knocked down by shell explosions but continued his work of reorganization until the success of the attack was assured.
