Smith (MCSN: 165012), United States Marine Corps, is cited by the Commanding General, Second Division, American Expeditionary Forces. Under heavy shell fire in an emergency he volunteered to carry ammunition disregarding all danger to himself while serving with the 15th Company, 6th Machine-Gun Battalion near Chateau-Thierry, France.
