Corporal Heryford distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Machine Gun Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near the Meuse River, France, 10 – 11 November 1918, in helping man a machine gun in the presence of heavy enemy fire when all the other guns had been lost and cut off on the opposite side of the Meuse River.
