The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant David Kipness (MCSN: 0-525), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the attack on the Bois de Belleau, France, 11 June 1918. Conspicuous for his bravery, coolness and good-judgment, Second Lieutenant Kipness caused an entire company of machine guns to surrender. He single-handedly captured the first four gun crews and assisted in the capture of the remainder of the company.
