The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major General Edward Mallory Almond (ASN: 0-4666), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 25 and 26 April 1945, while Commanding the 92d Infantry Division, in Italy. While his troops were engaged in a bitter offensive against a stubborn foe, Major General Almond entered a town near the front lines which was under complete domination of enemy artillery and mortar fire. For six hours following his entry, the enemy subjected the town to a tremendous artillery concentration. Regardless of the extremely hazardous situation, he remained in the area, personally supervising the forward movement of his infantry and artillery in the assault on Lavagna. On the afternoon of the following day, he personally reassured and encouraged the men in moving from Chiavari toward Genoa. After t his town had been secured, he disdained the relative security of buildings and again conspicuously exposed himself to the extremely hazardous combat conditions. Moving from unit to unit he directed and inspired the armor, infantry and field artillery in its advance toward the highly strategic objective of Genoa. Major General Almond’s bold and completed determination to close with the German enemy and destroy him reflect high credit on his aggressive fighting spirit which exemplified the gallant traditions of the United States Army.
