Reverend Anselme Mayotte was serving at Saint Joseph’s Church in Grosvenordale, Connecticut, when he was elevated to the priesthood in June 1916 in Saint JosephÕs Cathedral in Hartford, Connecticut. He said his first mass at Quinebaug the following Sunday. As a Catholic priest, he served at Saint MaryÕs Church in Putnam, Connecticut, for only a year before entering military service in 1917. Commissioned a U.S. Army chaplain, he served in France during the war, earning a Silver Star. While on occupation duty in Germany, he died less than a month after the war ended, when he fell from his horse while on duty.

No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Chaplain’s Corps) Anselme Joseph Mayotte, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, SECOND DIVISION A.E.F., for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Chaplain Mayotte distinguished himself while serving with the 12th Field Artillery Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Blanc Mont, France, from 3 to 27 October 1918
