Levi Hainer received his Bachelor of Philosophy degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Lewisburg in 1905, and received his PhB from Bucknell College in 1908. He then attended Temple University in Philadelphia, where he received is D.D. in 1911. He was ordained a Baptist minister as was pastoring a church in Norristown, Pennsylvania, when he enlisted for military service in 1917. Commissioned a U.S. Army chaplain he served in France with the 502d Engineers, and later with the 58th Infantry Regiment, and was cited for gallantry in action while serving with the latter. After his war service he returned to his parish in Norristown to resume his civilian ministry.

No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Chaplain’s Corps) Levi Morrill Hainer, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Chaplain Hainer distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as a Chaplain with the 58th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in France, during World War I.
