Carl Lauer received his preparatory education at the Columbus (Ohio) Academy and the Lutheran Theological Seminary. He was ordained a Lutheran minister and was commissioned a U.S. Army Chaplain on July 25, 1917, serving until his honorable discharge on May 28, 1919. Following the war he returned to his pastorate where he was also active in the Rotary Club. He served for 20 years as the Chaplain for the State Correctional institution at Rockville, Pennsylvania.

No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) Carl Frederick Lauer, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General of the 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Chaplain Lauer distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as Chaplain with the 130th Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in France, during World War II.
