Thomas Gavin was ordained a Catholic Priest in 1911, and was assigned to the Archdiocese of New York. While serving as an Assistant at the Church of the Epiphany in New York City, he entered military service in 1917 and was commissioned a U.S. Army chaplain, serving with the 2d Division in France, where he was cited for gallantry in action. After the war he returned to ministry in New York.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Chaplain’s Corps) Thomas F. Gavin, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, SECOND DIVISION A.E.F., for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Chaplain Gavin distinguished himself while serving with the 2d Supply Train, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Vierzy, France, 18 to 19 July 1918.
