Randolph Ridgely was a non-graduating member of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1892 and later 1894. After leaving both times, he enlisted in and was commissioned in the Coast Guard. He served from 1932 to 1935 as Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, and retired as a U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral in 1935.

YAMACRAW and the U.S.S. CASTINE, engaged in the important, exacting and hazardous duty of transporting and escorting troops and supplies through waters infested with enemy submarines and mines, during World War I.
