By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Alphons Semmelman, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 3d Supply Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the afternoon of 16 July 1918, while acting as assistant driver on a truck hauling ammunition to the 10th Field Artillery in the vicinity of Le Rocq Farm France, Private Semmelman showed unusual devotion to duty and courage by crossing and re-crossing an exposed area under intense shell fire, helping to unload his truck after arrival at the destination. Finally being seriously wounded in the head, and the driver of the truck being painfully wounded in the hand, he drove the truck back to a place of safety. After being treated at a Field Hospital, he refused to be evacuated to a hospital.
