By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Earl B. Rathbun, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 3d Supply Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, after being seriously gassed near Courboin, France, on 16 July 1918, Corporal Rathbun continued to drive his truck, which was loaded with men of the 30th Infantry Regiment, until he lost consciousness. Corporal Rathbun was under the direct observation of the enemy and exposed to heavy shell fire, but succeeded in transporting his truck to a place of safety.
