    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Herbert Yardley, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company F, 3d Supply Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in command of three trucks loaded with men to act as stretcher bearers, Sergeant Yardley displayed exceptional courage near Conniges, France, 18 July 1918, in leading these trucks through heavy enemy bombardment. So heavy was the fire that it was necessary for the drivers to wear their gas masks.
