By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Robert H. Hirzel (ASN: 1169718), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Ambulance Company No. 5 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Davis showed extraordinary heroism on the Marne engagement from 14 July to 10 August 1918, and on the Argonne-Meuse Sector from 1 to 30 October 1918. Especially commendable was his work from 14 – 18 July, when he drove his ambulance repeatedly through the most intense shell fie, evacuating wounded from St. Eugene and Le Rocq Ferme.
