By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Herbert E. Carrick (ASN: 1196261), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Ambulance Company No. 5 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Carrick showed extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty in the Marne engagement from 14 July to 10 August 1918, and on the Argonne-Meuse Sector from 1 to 30 October 1918. Especially commendable was his work from 15 to 18 July, when he continued his evacuation of wounded until his ambulance was struck by shell fire, putting it out of commission. In spite of the intense shelling, he, together with his orderly, worked trying to repair the car until the coming of darkness prevented further work.
