    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Howard L. Ward (ASN: 1169694), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Ambulance Company No. 5, 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private First Class Ward displayed extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty both in the Marne engagement from 14 July to 10 August 1918, and on the Argonne-Meuse Sector from 1 to 30 October 1918. Especially commendable was his work from 14 to 18 July, when he drove his ambulance through an intense barrage, evacuating wounded from Le Rocq Ferme. He drove until his car was so badly injured by shell fire that in spite of repeated attempts to repair it under shell fire, he finally had to abandon it.
