By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Wagoner Horace A. Schmidt (ASN: 1169686), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Ambulance Company No. 5, 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Wagoner Schmidt showed extraordinary courage in driving his ambulance during the Marne engagement from 14 July to 10 August 1918, and on the Argonne-Meuse Sector, from 1 to 30 October 1918. Especially commendable was his work from 14 to 19 July, when he again and again drove his ambulance through the intense German barrage to evacuate wounded from Le Rocq Ferme to St. Eugene.
