    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Wagoner Stanley J. Mapes (ASN: 1193546), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Wagoner Mapes was on his way from the 4th Infantry Regiment Aid Station with a load of patients when he found a loaded ambulance from his own company stuck in the mud, and under the severest shell fire displayed the greatest coolness and ardent concern for the safety of the patients in both ambulances by getting them all under cover. Returning with his empty ambulance he pulled his comrades out of he mud with the utmost coolness, although fragments of exploding shells repeatedly hit his ambulance; after which he went back to the aid station, picked up his patients and evacuated them to safety to the dressing station at Montfaucon.
