By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Wagoner Ray A. Johnson (ASN: 1169739), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Ambulance Company No. 7, 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, during the German attack on the Marne, after the orderly had driven off with his ambulance, Wagoner Johnson took a Dodge touring car and continued to evacuate wounded from the dressing station at Crezancy, St. Eugene and La Chanel, until a wheel on the touring car was broken by an exploding shell from the enemy. He displayed absolute fearlessness and a very high devotion to duty.
