By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant John W. Prothro (ASN: 1196264), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Prothro showed remarkable devotion to duty both in the Marne engagement and on the Argonne-Meuse Sector. Especially commendable was his work from 14 – 18 July 1918, when he worked continuously in the open, exposed to intense shell fire at Courboin, directing the loading and dispatching of ambulances, finally when relieved, leading some two hundred slightly wounded patients from Courboin to Essles, falling exhausted on his arrival at this station.
