By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant John R. Hoban (ASN: 1140018), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with an Ambulance Company, 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Crezancy, France, 15 July 1918, after the Medical Officer had been gassed and evacuated, Sergeant Hoban continued to dress wounded soldiers under a heavy barrage and carry them to safety until he, himself, was so overcome with gas, that he had to be evacuated to the rear. At Belleau Woods, the Battle of the Marne, and in the recent Argonne-Meuse Offensive he displayed remarkable coolness and bravery.
