By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Louis E. Chance (ASN: 1193344), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Montfaucon, France, on 6 October 1918, Sergeant Chance voluntarily left his protection and went one hundred yards through a violent barrage, rendering first aid and carrying to shelter a wounded comrade. A few minutes later, without thought of personal safety, he again went through this barrage, rendering first aid to the wounded. His act of bravery and loyalty was an excellent example and inspiration.
