By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Medical Corps) Henry C. Ricks, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Ambulance Company No. 7, 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Captain Ricks was especially commendable by his fearlessness and devotion to duty under the severest shell fire, displayed at Courboin at the beginning of the German Offensive. He worked in the dressing station continuously, 14 – 16 July without rest, dressing wounded and dispatching ambulances. His tireless energy was an inspiration to those about him. Also he further proved his value to the service and devotion to duty in the Meuse-Argonne Sector 1 to 30 October 1918, while supervising and personally conducting convoys of ambulances to the furthermost advanced Battalion Aid Stations over roads that were being heavily shelled by the enemy, without apparent care for personal safety.
