    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Major (Medical Corps) John L. Day, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Major Day displayed exceptional courage and devotion to duty while Commanding Field Hospital No. 26 at Septsarges, in the Meuse-Argonne Sector, France, 19 to 28 October 1918. His hospital being in plain view of enemy observation balloons by dan and distinguishable by lights at night was the target of almost constant enemy shell fire at all times. At no time, however, did he show the least fear for his personal safety but very calmly and with exceptional initiative, cared for the many wounded that came his way, by reason of which he proved himself a great inspiration to his men and won the loyal support and admiration of all about him.
