By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Lieutenant Colonel (Medical Corps) Samuel C. Gurney, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving as Commanding Officer of the 3d Sanitary Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Gurney especially distinguished himself by the evacuation of the wounded in the Marne and Meuse-Argonne Campaigns, displaying great energy and executive ability, disregard of hardship and exposure, and overcoming enormous physical difficulties, earning the commendation of his superiors by his excellent performance of a most difficult task.
