By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant [then Sergeant] Harry J. Patterson, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 3d Ammunition Train, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Champagne Marne Defensive, 14 – 18 July 1918, Sergeant Patterson displayed valorous and meritorious service as Sergeant in Charge of he Mechanics of his company, responsible for keeping all trucks in operating condition and making repairs on the road. On the night of 14 – 15 July he spent all night waiting for the battery to arrive and as soon as it was light drove all roads looking for this battery. This was done under heavy shell fire.
