By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal George W. Colby (ASN: 244474), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 5th Field Signal Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 11 October 1918, north of Bois de Cunel, France, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, Corporal Colby exhibited great courage and disregard for personal safety in crossing an open field and ascending a hill in full view of the enemy and under heavy artillery fire and sniping in order to install telephone communications from the forward Battalion Post of Command to an observation post in the front line trench.
